Earthquakes
New Zealand is a country which is prone to earthquakes and the entire coastline is in a tsunami zone. With the hotel being so close to the coast, it is important that guests are aware of what to do should an earthquake or tsunami strike. In any event, please follow the directions of hotel staff.
Should an earthquake occur while you are in the hotel, move no more than a few steps, drop, cover and hold. Stay in the building until the shaking stops and you are sure it is safe to exit. In most buildings in New Zealand you are safer if you stay where you are until the shaking stops.
If you are in the hotel elevator, drop, cover and hold. When the shaking stops, try and get out at the nearest floor if it is safe to do so.
If you are outdoors when the shaking starts, move no more than a few steps away from buildings, trees, streetlights and power lines, then drop, cover and hold.
If you are at the beach or near the coastline, drop, cover and hold. Then move to higher ground immediately in case a tsunami follows the quake.
After an earthquake, listen to a local radio station (Newstalk ZB 90.3FM or 1278AM) as emergency management officials will be broadcasting advice and instructions for the community to follow.
Also, expect to feel aftershocks.
